More Surfing

I've been surfing and kiting the last couple of days in waist high waves and 25mph winds. Texas has been good to me this summer.

Powered up wake style kiting

Had a good day out at grassy point well powered up on my 9M kite this afternoon. I usually like working on un hooked moves in light wind and almost underpowered conditions but today I decided to start working on the moves like S bends, ralies, and backs to reverts all fully powered up. It's a little unnerving setting up for a ralie when you unhook and the power of the kite feels like it's going to rip your arms off but I decided to just go for it and see what happens. I unhooked, edged hard for the ralie and the kite ripped me off the water so hard and fast that I was sure that this wasn't going to end well. After flying through the air higher and faster than I can ever remember I prepared for landing, or the big wipeout, and came down perfectly in control so I hooked back in and rode away. Whenever you land a move like that instead of crashing it gives you the confidence to keep going and see if you can't do it again. I tried a couple more ralies, S bends, backs to reverts and landed all of them and rode away. Even though I was worried about getting my ass kicked with each move I tried I kept going for it hoping that I would eventually get used to that powered up feeling. I'm not used to it yet, but I will be trying it again next time the conditions are right and hopefully I'll be more confident to go for it.

Wow...We have Surf

The forecast has been calling for some waist high swell and we've all had our fingers crossed hoping. Well it came true and we had some nice waves in the cheast to waist high range. This summer has been lacking in surf so everyone in corpus that surfs was out. Now that might sound bad but there are only about 100 surfers and a number of surf spots so it really doesn't get that crowded. I went out for a morning session and another inthe afternoon and surfed until I coouldnt lift my arms out of the water. Time to come in and call it a day. Today was the first day that I haven't kited since returning home from Portland but I just didn't have the energy. Looks like we might get a little more surf tommorrow.

Wildcat kite session

I've been kiting every day since I got back from the gorge and wanted to do something a little different so I drove over to Portland Tx to kite at Wildcat park. Well it was different. Wildcat is on Corpus Christi Bay so it has alot of bumpy chop. This makes for some nice jumps if you can get the timing down but the chop can throw your timing way off. Anyway, to make this story shorter let me just say that I won't be going back anytime soon. It took me almost a year to go kiting over there and it will most likely be another year before I return. I'll stick to my uncrowded flatwatet spot from now on.

flatwater SUP and some kiting

i went out to the beach today to do a flatwater SUP workout and lucked out and there were some nice little waves to play around on. not real waves, but little waves are still more fun than just paddling flatwater. got a nice 45min workout in and headed back to the shop.
the wind look good again today so i headed out to grassy point late this afternoon for some nice 9m kiting. got to work on some unhooked moves and started working on some new toeside moves. i need to get back to working on handle pass tricks but the water level is a little low and i don't really want to be landing head first in a foot of water. tides should be filling in later in the week so water levels should be back to normal.

a little surfing and some kiting

when i say a little surfing what i really mean is little surf, double ankle height, with some nice little nose rides here and there. fun is where you find it.
the kiting was fun again today, sarah, zach and i went out well powered on 9m kites and had a nice hour long session. all of us are working on some new moves so one of these days i'll bring along the video camera and do a little filming.

First kiting session back in Corpus

After kiting some gusty Gorge winds durring out visit in Oregon it's nice to be back in Corpus and kiting in what we would call gusty wind here. Today we had a nice powered up 9M session. Got hit by a gust mid railey and that might have been my biggest and possibly best railey yet. The forecast looks good for some more wind so hopefully more posts in the near future.

Just back from 4th of July in the Gorge with family and friends

Sarah and I just spent ten days in Portland, six days with family and four days out in the Gorge kiting with friends. We had a great time seeing long lost friends and getting to do some Gorge style kiting. It's crazy how much different the landscape is from Texas to Oregon. Green trees everywhere with snow capped mountains and rolling hills in Oregon back to flat brown and hot in Texas. Not that Corpus is a bad place, but scenery is not it's best trait.

Oregon we'll miss you
